It is the only pontifical seminary outside of Italy and was granted pontifical status in 1892 by Pope Leo XIII. The Josephinum has continued the vision of its founder, Msgr. Joseph Jessing, by preparing clergy for the new evangelization and to serve the pastoral needs of the Church. In fidelity to that vision and in addition to the seminary, the Josephinum offers educational resources through distance learning to diaconal candidates, permanent deacons and lay ministers who serve the people of God through ministry in the Church. The Josephinum established the Josephinum Diaconate Institute in 2007 with the vision of using online education to strengthen pre and post ordination diaconate formation on a national and worldwide basis. The Institute's distance learning program was developed in conjunction with the National Association of Diaconate Directors (NADD) and is now accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS). COURSE OFFERINGS Courses are taught in the Fall, Summer, and Spring semesters. Classes for Candidacy and Continuing Formation are two credit hour courses of 12 weeks in length; Aspirancy classes are one credit hour courses of six weeks in length. The Aspirancy courses are designed to provide an educational component during the first year of discernment and prepare Aspirants for Candidacy. All courses are also available to priests, deacons and lay ministers seeking to strengthen their preparation for ministry. Course materials are online and can be accessed at any time during the semester. Students complete reading assignments, write brief reflection papers, participate in an online forum and, in some cases, undertake practical experience in a ministry as part of the course. Three conference calls are scheduled during the semester. Students register for courses using the easy online registration form. Multiple course tuition incentives are offered for students who pay in advance for two or more courses; not all courses need be taken in the same semester.
